Thomas F. Bayard was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware, from March 4, 1869 to March 6, 1885, President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, from October 10, 1881 to October 13, 1881, U.S. Secretary of State, from March 7, 1885 to March 6, 1889, and U.S. Ambassador to the U.K., from June 22, 1893 to March 17, 1897.
He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1876, 1880, and 1884.
Thomas was the son of Anne (Francis) and James A. Bayard, Jr. (James Ashton Bayard), who was a U.S. Senator from Delaware, from 1851 to 1864, and from 1867 to 1869. His uncle, Richard H.
